Course Goals:
- To expose the student to a variety of music software and hardware.
- To provide the student with fundamental skills in using MIDI applications.
- To demonstrate the creative use of MIDI and technology through the study
of compositions and techniques which implement electronics and computers.
- To expose the student to a variety of MIDI software and hardware.
Course Objectives:
As a result of participation in this class, the student will be able to:
- Have the ability to discuss educational music computer programs for use
in the classroom
- Develop skills to notate a music composition using Finale
- Identify the components of a MIDI computer system and their functions
- Use MIDI sequencing software to edit and produce synthesized sound files
- Compose a short musical work using MIDI sequencing software
Required Materials:
- Portable Headphones with a 1/4 inch plug.
- An active UMD e-mail account. University-assigned student e-mail accounts
(the d.umn.edu accounts) are the University's official means of communication
with all students. Students will need to regularly check this account.
- Flash Storage or Zip disks to contain the assigned work for the term. (Not
required, but strongly recommended)
Please note: You are responsible for backing up all your
work.
Attendance Requirements:
Each student will be allowed one unexcused absence per semester. Each absence
after this allowed amount will result in the lowering of half a letter grade
per absence.
Grading:
Grades will be determined by the following criteria:
- Terms/History quiz 10%
- Quiz on computer terms that relate to music technology as discussed
in class. Questions on historical aspects of electronic music are also
included.
- Finale Project 30%
- Use Finale to notate a musical composition using the specifications
below:
- Music must contain at least two staves with each stave in a different
clef.
- The length of the project must be a minimum of 32 measures.
- Lyrics must be contained in a minimum of 6 measures. If the selected
work does not contain lyrics, you may write one your own.
- A minimum of six different chord symbols should be used.
- All dynamics, tempo markings, and other musical notations that are
contained in the original should be included in your Finale version.
- Pro Tools Project 30%
- Assignments/Homework 30%
Test and Final Grades:
A grade of 59 or below will receive an F.
