COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Chem 2542 is the second semester of organic chemistry at the sophomore-junior level. The lectures will cover organic spectroscopy, chemistry of aromatic compounds, structure and chemical transformations of functional groups, and introductory aspects of bioorganic chemistry.

LECTURE MATERIALS:

1. “Organic Chemistry”, 5th edition (2009) by Brown, Foote, Iverson, & Anslyn (required)
    (previous editions of this book or new Enhanced Edition are also acceptable)
2. Brown Organic Chemistry student solutions manual/study guide (e-book or hard copy) (recommended)
These materials are available from UMD Bookstore or can be purchased elsewhere.

Four Quizzes (20 min) 100 points (4x25 pts)
Three Midterm Exams (1 hour)  300 points (3x100 pts)
Final Exam (2 hours)  210 points (70 questions x3 pts)
Total: 610 points

Second Midterm Exam (Ch 17-21)    March 30 (Wednesday), 8:00 to 8:50 am
Third Midterm Exam (Ch 21-24)    April 27 (Wednesday), 8:00 to 8:50 am
Final Exam (comprehensive ACS standardized exam)     May 11 (Wednesday), 10:00 to 11:55 am
