Happy Halloween. I thought I would send out some information on upcoming
meetings of the Wild Ones Natural Landscapers Arrowhead Chapter as well as
reminders of opportunities to get involved. Please let me know if you have
any questions.
- MEETINGS
- Our next meeting will be on November 16, beginning at 6:00 PM at the UMD
Herbarium. Deb and Charlene have a great educational program planned AND
plan to provide good munchies as usual, so plan to attend and bring a friend.
Please see the Next Meeting page for
more information.
- There will be no meeting in December. In January we will hold a more
business-oriented meeting to work on planning projects and other chapter
business.
- Do you have a suggestion for a speaker, activity, subject or location for
a future meeting? Please send me your ideas. If the West End Garden club
can plan over a year in advance as Terri mentioned, we should be able to
plan at least 6 months out!
- OPPORTUNITIES
- Would you like to work with a school to help get grant funding and install
a native garden? We have two potential opportunities so far. Pat Thomas
would like to encourage Ordean School in the Lakeside area of Duluth to
plant native plants along their new athletic fields. If you could help Pat
encourage the school to do so and work with them if they agree, please let
me know (carol_andrews@hotmail.com).
- I also received a request to assist with a project at Stowe Elementary in
Gary/New Duluth. For more info, pls. see the info below. Please let me
know if you're interested in helping with this project.
- The deadline for the Wild Ones Seeds for Education grants is Nov. 15.
Please see the for-wild.com web site for info and applications.
- Film enthusiasts: We can use Duluth Public Access TV to get the message
out about Wildones and promotion of native landscaping in general, however,
we need to get someone trained in on how to use their cameras. There is a
free introductory class tomorrow evening, Nov. 1, from 6:15 to approx. 9:30.
The class explains what PACT is about and explains "production basics."
If anyone is interested, please call Duluth PACT office at 218-723-3686 to
sign up and get info on where to go.
- ========== E-mail re: project at Stowe Elementary School
I am the Environmental Education Coordinator for the UMD Outdoor Program. A
portion of my duties has me working with the staff at Stowe Elementary
School (Gary/New Duluth) on their environmental emphasis. In doing so, we
have devised a plan to construct a bird/butterfly garden in their front
courtyard. The interesting part of this service-learning project is that
the students in the first and fourth grades will work together to design the
garden, learn what native plants are needed to make the garden successful,
and then plant those plants in the spring. The fourth graders will then
teach their first grade peers how to plant. The administration and faculty
are excited about this project, and are working with environmental education
graduate students (from UMD) to make it possible.
We are currently in the process of writing a grant for this project.
The grant is the Lorrie Otto Seeds for Education Fund of the Milwaukee
Foundation (Wild Ones). Needless to say, I was very excited to discover
that there is a local chapter of Wild Ones! It would be
wonderful if local members would be interested in helping with this
project - giving ideas for the correct plants to use, helping with the
design, and eventually planting (or teaching how to plant) with the
students.
