HAPPY SPRING! (OK so it's still a couple of days away but it's feeling quite close)
This email contains information and questions regarding the upcoming March and April meetings as well as deadline info for those who plan to participate in the group plant order to Outback Nurseries. I also recently received information on the Spring Extravaganza gardening workshops coordinated by the Extension Service, so I'll note that below too.
OUTBACK ORDER DEADLINE: Friday March 22. If this presents a problem
for anyone, give me a call (727-9340). I plan to combine orders into
one over the weekend and submit it by Monday. It appears that
Outback's new and improved web site is now up and running at
MARCH MEETING: March 28. Note that we'll use 6:00 PM as the start time again (this isn't shown on the calendar). The main activity will be a seed starting workshop, but I also would like to include time to discuss the revised calendar, upcoming opportunities to use our displays at gatherings like the Earth Day Fair, and anything else that's on people's minds. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SEND ME SUGGESTIONS FOR TOPICS TO INCLUDE ON THE AGENDA. Also - I could use some help with the workshop part of the meeting. Please let me know if you are willing to assist in any way. Also - does anyone want to bring treats or beverages?
Our APRIL MEETING was supposed to be on April 25. As discussed at our last meeting, Wild Ones will also put up our display as part of the East Hillside Energy Fair (I think that's the name) that afternoon/early evening. Gail O. has confirmed that a room is available that we can use to meet there, so everything appeared to be working out well until I found out recently that the SPRING EXTRAVAGANZA will have a workshop that SAME NIGHT specifically on using native plants called "Establishing and Sustaining Natural Landscapes." My inclination is to participate in the Energy Fair but skip holding a meeting that night so that WO members can go to the Spring Extravaganze workshop. The subject for the April meeting was to be plant identification. What do others suggest? Should we stick with having a WO meeting on the 25th, reschedule it for another night in April (perhaps the 23rd or 24th?), skip it or ???
SPRING EXTRAVAGANZA workshops will be held on April 11, 18 and 25. I forgot what the subject on April 11 is, but April 18 will be on butterfly gardening. As noted above, April 22 is on "Establishing and Maintaining a Natural Landscape." Ron Bowen from Prairie Restorations will be the key speaker. (I took a class from Ron and found him to be a great source of information and entertaining.) Bob Olen will also talk about methods for keeping animals like deer and rabbits from totally consuming your garden. I will try to bring more details to the meeting in March.
Enjoy the snow but think spring!
Projects:
Our local Arrowhead chapter has several ongoing projects, including the community
garden in Leif Erikson Park; plant rescues; efforts to battle buckthorn, honeysuckle,
and other invasive exotic plants; helping the Loaves and Fishes house and possibly
Habitat for Humanity with landscaping; and many more. If you are interested
in learning more or getting involved with any of these activities, please give
me a call or visit our web site at www.d.umn.edu/~wildones.
I look forward to seeing you soon!
