Here's an update on April and May meetings:

  1. There will NOT be a Wild Ones meeting on Thursday, April 25. Instead, we encourage people to attend the Extension Service's Spring Extravaganza that night. The topic will be Establishing and Sustaining Natural Landscapes, presented by Ron Bowen from Prairie Restorations. (I took a class from Ron and found him to be a great source of information and entertaining.) Bob Olen will also talk about methods for keeping animals like deer and rabbits from totally consuming your garden. The program starts at 6:00 pm at Hermantown High School and you can register at the door.

  2. The East Hillside Fair on Thursday, April 25, where Wild Ones was to have a "demonstration," has been postponed.

  3. Anyone who is interested in planning for and maintaining the native plant community garden in Leif Erikson Park is invited to attend a potluck picnic and working meeting on Wednesday, May 8 at 5:30 pm at the garden (west end of Leif Erikson Park). Bring your work gloves! If it's raining, we'll meet at Sir Ben's and skip the picnic; wear rain gear, though, as we will still visit the garden and do some work if possible.

  4. Next Wild Ones meeting is on Thursday, May 16, 6:00 pm. This will be an outing to look for spring wildflowers at Jay Cooke State Park. This walk, led by Larry Weber, is a combined activity with Hartley Nature Center. Meet outside the park headquarters building. There is a small charge for this activity ($5, I think). Also be sure to pay for a park pass for your car if you need a daily pass. The walk will start at 6:00 pm. Those of us who arrive at 5:30 will spend some time sharing hints about plant identification techniques. Bring your favorite wildflower ID book if you like.

Please let me know if you have questions - hope to see you at one or all of these events!
