Greetings Wild Ones members and others interested in native plant landscaping and protection.

WILD ONES Natural Landscapers, Arrowhead Chapter Meeting Reminder/Announcements

JULY MEETING:
Thursday July 25, 6:00 pm at First Lutheran Church, 1100 E. Superior Street, Duluth
Following a brief business meeting, photographer Erik Hahn will present tips for taking good photos of nature, especially wildflowers. Following the presentation, we will go across London Road to our Native Plant Community Garden at Leif Erikson Park and practice some photography, so BRING A CAMERA if you like. I believe we will meet in the room called the Lower Commons; look for signs.

AUGUST MEETING:
Thursday, August 22, 6:00 pm.
We will visit Prairie Restorations near Proctor. (Watch for future email on carpooling and/or directions to Prairie Restorations.) Prairie Restorations, based in Princeton, Minnesota, started this northern Minnesota facility in 2001 and began selling plants and offering their planning and planting services locally in 2002. In addition to taking a tour, this is also an opportunity to purchase native plants. You will need to select the plants you're interested in and contact Prairie Restorations to place an order by August 12 so that they can check availability or get the plants from Princeton if they aren't available yet from local stock. You can see a list of the plants they sell on line at or call 218-729-7001 for a catalog.

OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  1. GROUP PLANT ORDER:
If you ordered plants that you have not received because LAI or Outback was out of stock, we will provide a refund. I am working on the paperwork to see who is owed and who owes a few dollars to cover the Outback delivery costs.
  2. Help needed for a FUN OPPORTUNITY:
We will have a table again this year at the Duluth Folk Festival on August 3 at Leif Erikson Park. The table will be next to our community garden. This is an excellent opportunity to share information on the concept of landscaping with native plants. It's very easy, as people are drawn to the garden and want to know more about it. If you are willing to sit at the table for 1-2 hours or would like more information, please contact Ruth Leathers at 728-9221 or rleather@d.umn.edu.
  3. LOCAL PLANTS FOR SALE:
Paul Hlina has some plants that he started this year that he is willing to sell. The following plants may be available - please contact Paul at 715-398-5453 or jhlina@d.umn.edu for more information or to place an order. Note: these are wet meadow plants, with the exception of columbine, although some will grow in medium-moisture conditions too: Swamp Milkweed, Boneset, Blue Vervain, Crooked Stem Aster, New England Aster, Swamp Aster, Showy Tick Trefoil, Sneezeweed, Green-headed Coneflower, Long-headed Coneflower, Marsh Blazing Star, Mountain Mint, Cardinal Flower, Giant Hyssop, Ironweed, Joe Pye Weed, Great Blue Lobelia, Columbine.
  4. Arrowhead Chapter garners fame in WILD ONES JOURNAL:
Members, in case you didn't open your recent Wild Ones Journal the minute it arrived, check out the article on page 3 by our VP BILL STEELE (and make note: NEVER ask Bill to mow your yard, even for pay!). Nice article, Bill! (Keep paging through the magazine and you may find a picture of someone else you recognize. :-)
