Happy New Year! I hope everone enjoyed the holidays. thanks again to Clayton
for hosting the Wild Ones party - it was a ton of fun not to mentioned all
the delicious food. I tried out Clayton's hawaiin pork recipe for New Year's
Eve and it came out great.
A couple of things to consider and get on your calendar as appropriate:
1. HARTLEY PLANTING PLANNING Mtg. is coming up soon: Wednesday January 17,
7:00 PM at Hartley Nature Center. I received Erik Hahn's "Knuckey Nature
Trail Proposal" today which will provide a good starting piont. We can
use all the help we can get to get the ball rolling on this again AND to get
in our hours so that we can continue to use the building for free (thus saving
big bucks). Please let me know if you are hoping to make it to the meeting
on the 17th OR if you can't come that date, but are interested in helping in
the future. We can start an email list just for this subgroup perhaps at some
point.
2. FEB. 3 LIVING GREEN CONF: Wild Ones has signed up to set up our info and
staff a table in the exhibitor's room, so we will need a few people to help
staff the table. I can do it much of the time, but I'm speaking during one
of the workshops and it's just more fun w/ more people. Please let me know
if you can help out and I'll get your name on the list of workers at the door.
We need to set up between 10:30 and 11:30 and staff the table until 5:00. we
get one free pass plus 2 more at discounted rate ($5). Let's say that the first
person to offer to help gets the free registration, so HURRY, the race is on!
3. Per my recent email, the next regular monthlhy meeting and program will
be on Jan. 24 w/ the meeting at 6:30 and Bob Olen, speaking on deer and varmit
control starting at 7:00. I need to check notes from the last meeting to see
what action items we had; I think there were a few related to purchase of a
sign for the comm garden in particular. We had 60 people (counting hartley
staff) at the Nov. meeting when Sam Thayer presented. Thank to everyone that
spread the word and attended - it was great info and very entertaining, wasn't
it? let's try to get 20+ at this meeting if we can.
4. Including the Living Green Conf I have 4 speaking engagements lined up between
now and end of February, which is great as far as getting the word out. I received
a call from Barb Akers w/ the Superior/Douglas Co master gardeners group asking
for a WO rep to speak at their April 16 evening meeting on spring wildflowers
and other exciting things to look for in the world of native plants early in
the year. If anyone else is interested in doing that presentation please let
me know. I can do it if need be, but I hate to hog all the fun AND I know some
of you (Clayton....) have some great photos of spring wildflowers.
