Howdy howdy. I was just out avoiding some house work by spending time weeding and trimming in front. I managemed to put the weeding and trimming off as well when the kids from across the street came to check out all the american lady caterpillars living in my pearly everlasting patch. Michelle, the youngest, said "I really like your garden. it's so wild and fun." Then a skunk wondered up the street and that was the end of that.
Thanks to everyone that attended the yard tours in June and especially to Clayton and Cathy for hosting. We had a nice turnout and of course REALLY enjoyed not 1, not 2, not 3 but 4 count 'em 4 pies at Clayton's house. But now back to focusing on plants. We learned all sorts of things about native plants as well as tackling invasive weeds. Cathy and her husband have a great forest by their house but have had to haul out buckthorn by the truckload and now the valarian (sp?) weed is trying to take over. I'm not sure what the maximum count was on hosta varieties at Clayton's but the orchids and other flowers were sure lovely.
NEXT EVENT: On July 25 from 5:30 to 7:30 we will have our annual "weed and feed" party and work night at our Wild Ones community garden that is located on the west end of Leif Erikson Park in Duluth along the LAkewalk. Bring some sort of food or drink to share, plus a plate and utensils and blanket or chair if you like as well. Come equipped also with gloves, weed pulling device of your choice, and a bucket or bag for weeds. If you are new to this email list or the idea of native plants, feel free to just stop by at any time between 5:30 and 7:30 even if you can't stay for dinner or weeding and we'll provide you with a garden tour.
I would also like to schedule a work night at Hartley Nature Center. Joy has been making great strides in improving the gardens in front of the building, but can use a lot more help. Tasks are likely to include working in the existing and well-established butterfly garden to weed and perhaps divide some of those plants (unless perhaps we want to wait and do the dividing later in the year). If you are interested in helping out at Hartley some evening between roughly 5:30 and 7:30, please let me know if you would prefer a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evening. I know Wednesdays aren't good for some of you, so I thought I'd make an attempt to offer an alternative.
Other Announcements:
Wild Ones is a member of the Duluth Garden Flower Society (DGFS), which meets the first Monday of every month at 5:15 in downtown Duluth (and if anyone would be willing to attend on behalf of Wild Ones, please let me know). Attached you will find the July meeting minutes, which mentions a few things that you may find of interest, e.g., there are still a few tickets left for the DGFS Secret Garden Tour later this month. Two other items of interest I will copy and paste into this email below:
From DGFS July 2007 Notes: Tom Kasper reported that...
3. Leif Erickson Park ? Was toured today by 60 people from all over the country familiar with large metropolitan gardens. They said that it was one of the best in the country and very impressed by our public gardens.
4. Garden Plot signs ? the sign for the Wild Ones has to be re-installed.
