History of Hartley

G.G. Hartley purchased unpopulated mixed forest land for farming in 1890, and again in the early 1900s.  The dairy farm began with about 100 cows in 1891, and grew until the farm’s closure in 1928. Hartley Pond was created in 1913.

The City of Duluth gained ownership of the land for a park in the 1940s.

Between 1975 - 2001, improvements included cross-country ski and hiking trails, and vehicle prohibition.

In 2003, Hartley Nature Center opened to offer quality educational programs and stewardship initiatives within Hartley Park.

The creation of a restored nature area and integrated trail will:

Ÿ          promote environmental awareness in the community

Ÿ         serve as a model for sustainable landscaping and restored habitat.
