WILD ONES, ARROWHEAD CHAPTER, CALENDAR FOR 2005

2004 Calendar

January 26, 2005 (Wed)
We will be "Planning a Garden Project." Please bring any plans you are already working on, photos, cutouts from magazines, plant lists, or just blank paper to start planning! We'll have on hand expeirenced native gardeners, native plant catalogs and a couple of videos for inspiration, and then we'll spend some time swapping ideas and getting them down on paper.

February 23, 2005 (Wed)
We will be putting together the Aldo Leopold garden bench! (To preview or download the bench plans go to:
http://www.epa.gov/greatlakes/greenacres/wildones/handbk/ , choose Wood Projects from the left index, and then choose Aldo Leopold Bench). The bench will come as a kit with all pieces cut, but we will need to drill holes and fasten the pieces together. Before being used in the garden your bench should be sanded and oiled or varnished or painted. Get creative and make your bench your own with stencils, carvings, or using a wood burner! To order your bench kit, call Cindy at 525-6504 (evenings) by Thursday, February 17. Please indicate the length you want the bench (33" up to 48"). We will be making the benches out of fir; cost is about $30.00. If you can, please bring a drill with a 3/16 or 7/32 drill bit, a 3/8 drill bit, a 9/16 wrench, and a Phillips head screwdriver for assembly on February 23.

If you are not ordering a bench, come anyway and help others who might not be as handy. We'll talk about gardening and hear about the Plant of the Month. Maybe someone will share their garden plan we were inspired to work on in January. Carol and others will also bring plant books, catalogs and other garden planning resources that all are welcome to use.

March 23, 2005 (Wed)
Arrowhead Chapter of Wild Ones proclaims spring IS coming and we’re all anxious for new things to start emerging from the frozen depths. What do you know about native sedges and grasses? On March 23, 7 p.m., Ethan Perry will be helping us identify the differences between the two. What are the benefits of these plants to our native wildlife? Which will add winter interest to our landscape? If you need erosion control, you will want to learn more about the amazing root systems of these plants.

We’ll also be handing out catalogs for Wild Ones member group orders on native plants, grasses, trees, and bushes. We’ll be placing the order in April.

April 27, 2005 (Wed)
Native substitutes for popular non-natives/hybrids. We have our favorite plants - some native, some not. If we had a native substitute for a non-native species, would we use it? Maybe you have done something like this in your landscape. Come and be a part of this interesting discussion.

April 30, 2005 (Sat)
Duluth Garden Flower Society (DGFS) Spring Gardening Conference, includes over 20 Gardening Seminars and a Gardener’s Market at Lake Superior College (Carol will be leading one class about native plants). See the web site for a brochure and registration form. Not sure if we can put up our display, but if someone is available to staff it, Carol will try to set it up. http://www.dgfs.us/dgfs2005conf.pdf

May 10, 2005 (Tue)
NABA-Northern Crescents presents, “Native Plants for Butterflies” with Paul Hlina of Leaning Pine Nursery. They meet at Benedictine Health Center, Kenwood Road, at 7 p.m. What a great topic!

May 26, 2005 (Thur)
Hidden Garden/Cemetery Tour. Wild Ones will be taking a trip to Chambers Grove Park with Tom Kasper as our guide. Chambers Grove is the oldest park (Tom’s an expert on the history of Duluth’s parks) with an old cemetery near by, and what better place to look for native plants? Meet at 6 p.m. at the park: drive west on Hwy 23 through Gary. Hwy 23 becomes a four-lane, divided highway. As you enter Fond du Lac, Hwy 23 becomes a two-lane roadway again. Just beyond the intersection with Hwy. 210, and just before the bridge, turn in at the Chambers Grove Park sign. map

May 28, 2005 (Sat)
Wild Ones will be having a table at the annual Duluth Garden Flower Society Plant sale (we are members of DGFS now!), and your contributions for selling are needed. Rumor has it most clubs make a few hundred $$ at this, with the total amount of money for the sale over $4000 last year! Ideas might be starting seeds OR dividing perennials (native and non-invasive, non-natives). Be sure to label them. Contact Carol as the time draws nearer to let her know how you’ll be able to contribute and help out.

June 23, 2005 (Thur)
