The November meeting will be on Thursday, November 16^th, at the UMD Herbarium   (overview page), located in Room 214 of the Life Science building.

• Deb P. and Charlene J. will discuss good collecting practices and will demonstrate how to prepare plant specimens for preservation.
• Bill S. will give the "plant of the month" talk. I think he's planning on presenting Epipactis helleborine, a non-native orchid, which is invading our area. He recently found this orchid in Itasca County.
• On display in the herbarium will be a few exotic/invasive plant species.
• Deb and Charlene have also planned a short herbarium tour.

The Life Science building, is located on the east side of Oakland Avenue, and is identified on the campus map with the abbreviation "LSci". Both labels "LSci" and "Oakland Avenue" are on the campus map. Oakland Avenue connects to St. Marie Street (north side of the campus) and College Street (south side of the campus.) The "LSci" building is shown with buildings labeled "HH" just to the north and "MWAH" just to the south. (Both of these building abbreviations seem hard to read.)

A yellow arrow points to an entrance into the Life Science building from Oakland Avenue. There are meters out in front of the Life Science building along Oakland Avenue (which require money until 8pm). Another option would be to park in the parking lot labeled "Lot A", which can be entered from the west side of University Drive, a short distance north of College Street. This is a $1 pay-as-you-enter lot. It's a short walk from Lot A to the Life Science building. The simplest route from Lot A to Life Science would be to walk between the "MWAH" building and the Medical School (labeled "Med School") building. On the map, these two buildings appear to be touching, with no space between them. They are actually connected by a "sky walk", beneath which you can walk to enter a courtyard. The Life Science building is shown on the left-hand (or west) side of this courtyard, and there is an entrance from the courtyard into the Life Science building. As mentioned above, the Herbarium is in Room 214, which is on the "street level" floor if you've entered Life Science from Oakland Avenue, or up one floor if you've entered Life Science from the courtyard. Room 214 is fairly close to the Oakland Avenue entrance.
