Wild Ones July Meeting
WHEN: Wednesday, July 22, 2004, 5:30 pm
WHERE: Bog walk at the south end of Pequaywan Lake Road in Normanna
Township (Meet or carpool to the North Star Town Hall, about 20-21miles north
of Duluth on Hwy 44, Pequaywan Lk Rd.)
AGENDA:
FUN STUFF:
- Join us on a Bog Walk with Deb Pomroy
at the south end of Pequaywan Lake Road. Deb is Assistant Scientist at the Olga
Lakela Herbarium at UMD and she knows plants! We will be looking for pitcher
plants (Sarracenia purpurea), leatherleaf (Chamae-daphne calyculata), bog laurel
(Kalmia polifolia), bog rosemary (Andromeda glaucophylla), black spruce (Picea
mariana), small bog cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccus), large bog cranberry (Vaccinium
macrocarpon), creeping snowberry (Gaultheria hispidula), cottongrass (Eriophorum
spp.), sedges (Carex spp.), and a lot of Sphagnum. Sounds like fun! Hip waders
are appropriate, or you could wear knee (shorter) boots and not go in the bog
as far, or you could wear an old pair of tennis shoes and wade in as deep as
you want. Bring along a change of clothes, if necessary, and any other outdoor
gear that’s appropriate for this environment. We will be 6 or 7 miles
from any restroom facilities, so plan accordingly. We will meet at 5:30 p.m.
(location North Star Town Hall) to carpool to the bog.
Everyone is welcome.
