Group Order: Deadline to submit orders to me = May 11
We decided to do a group plant order this year, to be coordinated by Carol
(me) and Cindy. Last time we did the purchase through Boreal Natives, so
this year we'll be buying locally from Paul Hlina. I have spoken with Paul
Hlina of Leaning Pine Native Plants in Superior, and he said that based on
what is germinating he should have an excellent crop of plants to choose
from again this year. Please let me know if you would like to participate
in the group plant order. Paul offers us wholesale prices, a savings of roughly
30%, if we coordinate one big order. This is a benefit for members only,
but of course everyone is welcome to become a member!
I will need to get one of Paul's plant catalogs and our order form to anyone that is interested in making an order (maybe I'll ask Paul if we could post a pdf on our web site, otherwise we'll mail them). Paul sells some trees and shrubs in addition to many grasses and flowing plants. In the past we have also purchased trees and shrubs through Outback Nurseries in Hastings, but unless anyone needs to purchase a large # of trees or shrubs that Outback carries and Paul does not, I think we'll skip that this year.
This will be followed by a presentation at 7:00 PM by Dr. John Pastor, Biology
Professor at UMD, speaking on the impacts of global warming on northeastern
Minnesota. If you have been reading up on global warming, you may have heard
about impacts of rising sea levels on coastal areas, increasing draughts in
sub-Saharan Africa, and other impacts, but what can we expect may happen more
locally? Come join us and find out!
The meeting and presentation are free and open to the public, although non-members
of Hartley or Wild Ones are encouraged to make a donation to Hartley if you
like.
