Shattering The Myth: Plays by Hispanic Women Selected by Denise Chavez Edited by Linda Feydor

Course Objectives

1. To explore the different tasks facing the playwright, director, actor and designers involved in the development of a new play through practical experience.
2. To develop the student_s understanding of how a new play is constructed, shaped and produced in the professional setting.
3. To experience the various levels of new play development utilized in the professional theatre.

Course Requirements

1. Attend class regularly, fully prepared, and take part in the activities of the day.
2. Participate in the playwriting exercises assigned during the first three weeks of the term.
3. Fully perform the tasks required of them as a part of a play development team; including rehearsal/rewrite phase, staged
reading/rewrite phase and final performance/final draft phase.

This class will begin with a three week focus on playwriting exercises that will stress how a play is constructed and workshopped into its' final form. All students will take part in a variety of ways, with a special emphasis on moving each student away from the specific task ( actor, director, playwright ) for which they enrolled in the class. During the third week of the term, the teams ( one playwright, one director, and a full cast of actors ) will be assigned by the instructor. From this point forward, the team will develop the play through the stages of sit down readings, staged readings and workshop production performances. The expectations of each group of students are as follows:

PLAYWRIGHTS

You will be expected to turn in a revised script at three predetermined dates for each new phase of the class. Your job will be to take an active part of all of the rehearsals and presentations by watching and taking notes geared for rewrites, conferring with the director, actors, designer and instructor about the development of the text, and turning in a final draft of the play as it will be performed at the end of this class.

DIRECTORS

You will be expected to discuss the play with the playwright during every phase of the workshop, write a short Theme/Interpretation paper concerning the play and the development process (4-5 pages), work closely with the actors helping them to develop their characters, and fully stage the play over the course of the term. You will coordinate meetings outside of class time for all rehearsals, script conferences and meetings with the designer.

ACTORS

You will be expected to attend all rehearsals you are called for fully prepared to work, develop the character assigned to you as completely as possible, provide your comments, opinions and insights about your character when and where appropriate, and give a final performance during finals week. You will also be assigned a research project concerning a professional play development workshop. This will be 4-5 pages long and shared with the class

All students will be expected to participate in the scripts they are not involved with by carefully observing all rehearsals in class and taking part in discussions after readings and performances. This is an important part of participating in the class.

PLAGIARISM STATEMENT
Plagiarizing from another text is not allowed under any circumstances. Any student caught plagiarizing will automatically receive a zero on the assignment and their final grade will be dropped one full letter grade.
NOTE
Individuals who have any disability, either permanent or temporary, which might effect their ability to perform in this class are encouraged to inform the instructor at the start of the quarter. Adaptation of methods, materials or testing may be made as required to provide equitable participation.
