About the Writers' Workshop
Mission
Because we all write, the mission of the Writers' Workshop is to support any member of the UMD campus community who seeks to become a better writer.
Mission in Action
The Workshop facilitates collaborative conversations with writers at any level and at any stage in the writing process in order to uncover strategies for effective communication. Those who participate in such conversations engage in the continuing process of appreciating and developing the complex skill and the intricate art of the well-written word.
History
The Writers' Workshop opened on September 3, 2013, supported by funding from the Office of Academic Affairs. Collaborating with the College of Liberal Arts, the Swenson College of Science and Engineering, the Academic English Language Program, and the Departments of English, Linguistics, and Writing Studies; Chemistry and Biochemistry; and Biology, the Workshop is able to offer one-to-one writing consultation to UMD's undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and staff. The Workshop's graduate student and faculty consultants have held thousands of sessions with hundreds of unique writers from across campus.
