Teaching Sciences (Earth & Space, Life, and Physical Sciences - Chemistry or Physics) B.A.Sc.
Teaching Sciences at UMD prepares students for licensure in general science (grades 5-8) as well as a second license in a chosen content area (see below). All students take core science coursework in biology, chemistry, geology, physics, and mathematics. They learn how to teach sciences both inside and outside the classroom, integrating environmental education into formal and nonformal settings such as parks and nature centers. In the heart of northern Minnesota, students have the opportunity to go out into our abundant natural environments to apply science to the real world.
Teaching Earth & Space Science: This Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) degree is offered by the Department of Education in conjunction with the Department of Geological Sciences. Students have the option of completing an environmental education emphasis with this major.
Teaching Life Science: This Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) degree is offered by the Department of Education in conjunction with the Department of Biology. Students have the option of completing an environmental education emphasis with this major.
Teaching Physical Science: This Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) degree in teaching Chemistry or Physics is offered by the Department of Education in conjunction with the Department of Chemistry or Physics. Students choose an emphasis in either chemistry or physics for this major.
- Graduates will be eligible for MN licensure in general science grades 5-8 in addition to one of the following: Teaching Life Science 9-12, Teaching Earth & Space Science 9-12, Teaching Physics 9-12, or Teaching Chemistry 9-12.
- Graduates are highly sought after for their in-depth understanding of science, teaching, and technology.
- Field-based program with 40+ weeks of opportunities to be immersed in multiple classrooms.
- Focused coursework on teaching about and with American Indians, as well as the role of diversity in American education; candidates develop an understanding of working with all learners.
- Courses are rooted in current best practices that will prepare graduates to help students discover the world around them through inquiry and exploration.
- Effective lesson plan design and instruction.
- Oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to create instruction opportunities that are adapted to students with diverse backgrounds and exceptionalities.
- Use data to inform and improve instruction and programs.

Admissions and Scholarships

UMD's Education Department has over 25 scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. Scholarships vary in criteria and some are specifically for subject areas or students entering student teaching in the US or starting their student teaching abroad.
