Bulldogs Behind the Scenes: COGGS

Join us for a virtual behind the scenes look at Cyclists of Gitchee Gumee Shores (COGGS) and their vision for the trail ahead! Presenters include Waylon Munch, UMD alumnus and former COGGS Chair, and Cindy Willey, current COGGS Membership Director.

In 1994, a small group of mountain bikers started what is known as Cyclists of Gitchee Gumee Shores (COGGS) with the simple goal of building singletrack trails in the Twin Ports of Duluth, MN and Superior, WI. Twenty five years later those trails have grown to 89 miles of multi-use singletrack allowing anyone to bike, hike, or run from one end of Duluth to the other.

It was no easy feat to make the Duluth Traverse what it is today. It required the work of many, many volunteers, and a lot of help and funding from partner organizations such as the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA), the State of Minnesota, the City of Duluth and local businesses and individual donors. In 2019 alone, COGGS volunteers logged nearly 5,000 hours! The Duluth Traverse stands as a tribute to our community and the value we place on outdoor recreation.
