Tasty Tidbits: Debunking Diets
Stop dieting, and start enjoying your food!
As we welcome in the New Year, we also welcome in New Year’s resolutions. If one of those is to lose weight, get fit, or get “bikini ready” we often find ourselves scanning the internet for the next “cure-all” diet. However, searching on the internet will most likely lead to many diet options that all promise great results… How come so many diets exist? And how do I pick one diet that is right for me?
There is no magic answer and the concept of dieting is often the problem! A diet is typically thought of as a short term solution or plan. When a person starts a diet, he/she tends to make drastic changes to his/her normal eating habits. As a Dietitian, many people come to me frustrated after cycling through diet after diet. It is not about 30 day diet plans, 3-day juice fasts, or 10 day grapefruit diets.
A healthy diet begins with small everyday decisions to honor your body and make sustainable and long-term lifestyle changes. For example swapping out one can of soda per day with water over the course of a week would mean cutting out 1.5 cups of sugar and over 1,000 empty calories! Other components of a healthy lifestyle are filling half your plate with fruits and veggies, watching portion sizes, and moving your body.
So stop dieting, and start enjoying your food and listening to your body!
