Welcome Back Week: August 26th-September 3rd

What We Learn When We Learn a Language

8/26/2019 | 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM | BohH 112 We all use language. There are approximately 7,000 languages spoken in the world and multiple dialects of any given language. But how do we learn the language(s) we speak? And what are we learning when we learn language? How do babies, with their limited skills, learn to speak like the adults around them? We were all babies once, and we all had to learn the nuts and bolts of language. In this short session, we’ll talk about what babies need to figure out—how to perceive and produce words in continuous speech and how to untangle what words and phrases mean. By the end, you will have learned something about how we acquire language, about what Linguistics is, and what Linguistics courses are available at UMD. This event is designed for first-year students, but may also be of interest to any student who has not yet settled on a major, is interested in language, or has ever wondered what Linguistics is. This session offers resiliency tools that are easily implemented into life and have the potential to reduce stress, increase concentration, and improve overall wellbeing. Participants will learn and practice mindful awareness principles that are the key to embodying the benefits of mindfulness in their own lives by helping to focus attention and align intention, attitude, and action. This session is great for those beginning, sustaining, or rejuvenating their mindfulness practice. Hosted by Rachel Gilbertson.
