Castleberry Appointed UMD’s Faculty Athletic Representative

DULUTH, MN – Dr. Stephen Castleberry, a professor in University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) Department of Marketing, has been appointed the new faculty athletic representative at UMD.

“We are very excited to work with such a well-respected faculty member who possesses a vast knowledge of sports, significant business expertise and previous leadership positions,“ said UMD Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Josh Berlo.

Castleberry, who oversees UMD’s marketing and graphic design major, joined the Labovitz School of Business and Economics (LSBE) faculty in 1992 and among the classes he currently teaches is Sports Marketing, which he helped create. Over the past several years he has worked closely with Bulldog athletics, providing support with an extensive sports marketing internship program and also lending his expertise in the areas of sponsorships, event management and fan experiences.

Prior to his arrival at UMD, he held positions at Northern Illinois University (UARCO Professor of Sales and Marketing endowed chair) and the University of Georgia.

Castleberry has published forty-four refereed journal articles in national publications including Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, International Journal of Research in Marketing, Journal of Consumer Marketing, Journal of Advertising, Journal of Personal Selling and Sales Management, Journal of Business to Business Marketing, Journal of Marketing Management, and others. He is the co-author of the best-selling textbook Selling: Building Partnerships, now in its ninth edition (and now offered in Chinese and Spanish editions). He also serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Applied Business Research (he was marketing editor of this journal) and the Journal of Selling and Major Account Management. Castleberry has also done consulting work for international as well as regional businesses and appeared in eight segments of a PBS special on personal selling called The Sales Connection. His current areas of research include informal organization of sales teams, sales training, salesperson listening, and business ethics.

Among the honors that have been bestowed on Castleberry are the Horace T. Morse Distinguished Teaching Award, Hormel Meritorious Teaching Award, Beta Gamma Sigma Professor of the Year Award, Ideal Industries Excellence in Teaching Award, Merrell Dow Outstanding Teacher of the Year, NCR Award for Outstanding Teaching in the Undergraduate Program, UMD Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award and LSBE Faculty Service Award. He and his wife, Susie, and their eight children reside in Poplar, Wis.

Castleberry replaces Al Mensinger, who served in the FAR role since December 2007.
