"Out of the Shadows: Annie Traquair Lang & Helen M. Turner"

Dr. Jennifer Webb, Associate Professor of Art History in the School of Fine Arts at UMD, is offering a Tweevening, titled "Out of the Shadows: Annie Traquair Lang & Helen M. Turner" at the Tweed Museum of Art.

While women and children are the subjects of many of the genre scenes in the Tweed Museum of Art exhibition, Quiet Simplicity, also on view are paintings by two women artists, Helen M. Turner and Annie Traquair Lang. These women, the focus of the Tweevening, were highly praised in their lifetimes but have since received little scholarly attention. Their contributions to American painting are overshadowed by their connection with their teacher, mentor, and travel companion, William Merritt Chase, a leader in American Impressionism.

Dr. Jennifer D. Webb's research combines an exploration of the art, architecture and culture of Renaissance Italy with an interest in local Minnesota history. She teaches courses on Ancient, Renaissance, and Baroque art and architecture, as well as a class on the history of Urban Planning.
