Important Study Abroad Updates!

Dear students,

We hope this finds you well and that the adjustment to our new ways of school, work, and life is going along okay for you.

We wanted to provide an update on our current study abroad landscape. Like many other industries, our situation is constantly evolving and requiring us to live in the moment and work day by day.

We are grateful to share that all of our students who were abroad this spring semester have safely returned to the U.S. Unfortunately, we had to cancel all of our summer study abroad programs.

At this moment, we are hopeful and are set to run our 2020–21 Fall and Academic Year programs. A few programs have even extended their application deadlines, so please contact us as soon as possible if you’re interested in pursuing an option for fall. There is increased UMD study abroad scholarship funding for these programs and that scholarship deadline has been extended to May 17. Additionally, we’ve made exceptions and are being more flexible with the cancellation policy. However, we also want to be transparent in mentioning that the situation and program options may change at any point while the University continues to monitor the pandemic.

Nonetheless, despite all of this uncertainty—we do know that there will continue to be opportunities to study abroad in the future. So if going abroad is something you know you want to do someday, please don’t give up on planning. You can certainly continue to search for options and make plans while we see what programming looks like as we navigate this global situation. We encourage you to consider program options further out, such as our 2021 Faculty-led Winter Break, Spring Semester, or May and Summer options next year. You are welcome to view our full list of programs or search any of our affiliate study abroad options as well.

Please know that we are here to talk and are more than happy to work with you to find a program that would be a good fit. If you’d like to schedule a virtual meeting with one of our staff coordinators, please email studyabroad@d.umn.edu. Study Abroad 101 is a very helpful session with general details about study abroad, and it’s available for viewing online.

Let us know if you have any questions and please take care!
