#289. On the Seine.

17.5 x 25.5, oil on canvas. "Gilbert Munger" lower left. Offered as lot 73 (not illustrated) at the American Art Galleries, New York, auction of 14-15 January 1920 as the property of a private collector. The catalog describes the painting this way:
A COMPREHENSIVE landscape at once pastoral and sylvan, in sunshine and shadow, with nature encompassing the abodes of man in pursuit of the occupation of his existence, and animals thus support man. The Seine, silvery in summer sunlight winds between shores of fields and woods, passes hamlet of White walls and brown-thatch roofs on the left, and in the distance passes under the several arches Of a white masonry bridge. In the cool shade of the foreground a cowherd rests against a tree, watching two cattle moving toward the river, and out in the stream a fisherman is busy in his punt.
This description and size does not mach any other known pictures, but a Munger painting with this title was exhibited in London in the summer of 1898.
