We know that applying to college can be an overwhelming process. Below you'll find answers to several of our most common questions.

Students can apply directly to UMD or by using the Common Application. Please note that if you apply using the Common Application, the essay and letters of recommendation are not required.
If you are transferring from another University of Minnesota campus, please apply directly to UMD.
No. Students using either platform will receive equal consideration for admission.

Standardized test scores can be sent electronically through the platform you have taken your exams. Use UMD's school code below to have your scores sent to us:
Official transcripts are those received at UMD directly from the issuing source. Official paper documents are those received at UMD in sealed, unopened envelopes from the school, college, university, federal or state department of education. Official electronic documents are those received directly at UMD and marked as official via an approved transcript vendor (e.g., National ClearingHouse, Parchment, eSCRIP-SAFE).
Applicants may deliver paper documents in person, but the documents must be in a sealed, unopened envelope from the issuing source.
Yes, students who have limited financial resources and meet eligibility criteria set forth by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) will have their application fee waived. Applicants must complete all steps and have the waiver signed by an authorized official before forwarding to our office.
Also, UMD will accept letters in support (on official letterhead) of an application fee waiver from high school officials (counselors, principals, etc.) and representatives of College Bound Organizations (AVID, TRiO, etc.). Application fee waivers can be mailed or emailed. Please include the student's full legal name and date of birth (when possible).
UMD does not waive the application fee for International applicants. Applicants should not send cash for their application.
UMD does not waive the application fee during Minnesota College Knowledge Month.
If a student wishes to appeal their admissions decision they should contact their Admissions Counselor, or email our office: firstname.lastname@example.org.
The admissions appeal process involves consideration of new information (updated ACT/SAT scores, high school/college transcript) or extenuating circumstances that were not included or considered in the original application for admission. It is not necessary to reapply for admission to appeal an admissions decision.

You are considered a Minnesota resident if you have lived in Minnesota for at least one calendar year prior to the first day of class and if your primary reason for being in Minnesota is not to attend school.
UMD has reciprocity agreements with the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and the province of Manitoba, Canada. If you are a resident of any of these states or this province, you may qualify for resident tuition rates.

The Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP) allows residents from Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan*, Missouri, Nebraska, and Ohio to attend UMD and pay tuition that is slightly higher than in-state tuition. See cost & aid information here.
*Michigan residents who begin their studies through Spring 2021 are eligible for MSEP tuition.
The University of Minnesota Duluth complies with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy & Campus Crime Statistics Act. Information about UMD campus security and crime statistics can be found here. A hard copy or alternate formats of the Annual Security and Fire Safety report is available at the UMD Police Office in 287 Darland Administration Bldg.
Applicants who graduated from high school five or more years prior to applying to UMD and have not completed any college coursework or have completed fewer than 26 credits of previously attempted college coursework may request a waiver of the ACT/SAT application requirement. Applicants requesting an ACT/SAT waiver or contending their high school record is not reflective of their current academic aptitude must submit a personal essay along with their application for admission. The essay should address the applicant’s personal and educational goals as well as recent personal and professional accomplishments. Letters of recommendation may also be submitted.
All applicants with 26 or more previously attempted college coursework follow UMD’s transfer admission requirements. Individual questions should be directed to the Office of Admissions.
The Veterans Resource Center assists eligible student veterans, active duty personnel, dependents, reservists, and National Guard members with G.I. Bill benefits and questions regarding state and federal educational benefits programs.
Campus Visit FAQ
There are several different options when it comes to campus visits at UMD:
A General Campus visit includes a presentation from an admissions representative, a campus tour from a student tour guide, and the opportunity to meet individually with an admissions representative. With advance notice, our office can also facilitate additional visit requests. General campus visits are smaller programs (max 60-70 attendees) and take approximately 2.5 hours (not including your travel time). Programs on Monday afternoons, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays tend to have fewer participants.
Bulldog Fridays and Champ Saturdays follow the same itinerary as a general campus visit program, but have the added bonus of an Academic and Student Service Information Fair (and, at times, a student panel). During the information fair, visitors will have the opportunity to engage with representatives from campus departments and colleges. Bulldog Fridays and Champ Saturdays are offered during the days/times of the year when we have more visitors. Bulldog Fridays and Champ Saturdays can range from 120-175 participants and take approximately 3 hours (not including your travel time).
Transfer Tuesday Programs are intended for transfer students (students who graduated high school and have taken college coursework postgraduate) only. These programs include a presentation from a transfer admissions representative and a campus tour from a student tour guide. In addition to your tour, you may also schedule an appointment with an admissions counselor. With at least two weeks notice, academic and campus partner appointments may be arranged. Appointments are subject to departmental availability.
Group visits are campus visits for high school student groups, transfer student groups, sport organizations, or local community groups of eight or more people. The program includes an information session by an admissions representative and a student-led campus tour. Individuals must submit a request for this type of visit program.

Every campus tour is unique and as much as possible geared towards prospective students' academic interest. All tours include viewing of academic buildings, a lecture hall, an on-campus residence hall, the Superior Dining Center, and other areas of campus that are relevant to the student's interest.
If you have any additional requests for your visit (e.g., meeting with a faculty member or adviser of the major in which you are interested), you can request this when you register for your campus visit.
Special requests must be submitted two weeks before your visit to allow enough time for our office to confirm with faculty or staff. Please be as specific as possible with your request so that we can match you to the most appropriate person. The Office of Admissions does its best to arrange meetings with our campus partners. However, we are not able to meet all special requests. At times, we may have to make an alternative arrangement (e.g., an academic adviser in lieu of a faculty member) or when faculty are not available on campus (summer visits).
Additional accommodations for interpreters, mobility concerns, etc., can also be requested.
Unfortunately, we are unable to arrange meetings with any athletic teams/coaches. You may, however, contact the Athletics Department directly at 218-726-8168.
Every year, UMD welcomes over 18,000 visitors to campus. We strive to balance tour availability with a positive visit experience for you and your family. If a visit program reaches its maximum capacity, it will no longer display on our visit calendar.
Visits are automatically removed from the calendar two days out from the visit date. If you would like to check availability within the next 48 hours, we encourage that you call our office at 218-726-8504.
Finally, there are other dates/times of the year when we do not provide campus tours:
- Campus holidays
- Winter break (mid December to mid January)
- Spring break (early March)
- Spring final exams and graduation (May)
- Move-in and fall semester start (late August to early September)
- Fall break (last Thursday/Friday of October)
- Fall final exams (early December)
UMD's hallways are open 365 days of the year and visitors to the area can always stop by the desk outside of our office (25 Solon Campus Center) for a self-guided tour booklet.
Unfortunately, at UMD we do not have overnight visit programs for prospective students. If you are planning to stay in the Duluth area overnight, view our lodging page for additional information.
Yes, our office provides visiting students and their families who are here over the lunch hour an opportunity to eat lunch in the Superior Dining Center.
After selecting your visit day to UMD, you and your parent (if email provided) will receive a confirmation email with a parking pass, directions to campus, and an itinerary of your campus visit. Please allow additional travel time, if needed, when coming to Duluth. We look forward to seeing you on campus!
If you have taken any additional college credit, unofficial transcripts may be beneficial to bring with speaking to an admissions representative. Feel free to come prepared with any questions that you may have about UMD, we are happy to help!
Campus visitors are encouraged to park in Gold Lot A, off College Street and University Drive. Directions to this parking lot and how to get to campus can be found here.
If you are unable to print your parking pass, or did not receive one, contact our office at email@example.com, and we will mail you a parking permit. Please allow five-seven business days for our office to process this request.
Additional parking passes are also available when you check-in for your campus visit.
Prospective students and families are encouraged to park in Gold Lot A with their assigned parking pass. From Gold Lot A, please follow the Office of Admissions Visit Program directional signage near the parking lot and along the sidewalks to your campus visit check-in location.

A full campus tour at UMD is just under 3 miles. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather. UMD and the city of Duluth are located on a hill overlooking beautiful Lake Superior. Campus tours are both inside and outside of campus (weather permitting), though the UMD campus design (concourse/skywalk system) protects visitors from the harshest of Minnesota winters.

Incoming freshmen have completed or will complete a high school diploma, or obtain a GED. Students must have no previous college work or have only completed college credits while enrolled in high school.

Admission decisions are based upon several primary and secondary factors.

The priority application deadline at UMD is December 15. Students who apply to UMD by December 15 are eligible for merit-based scholarship consideration. The final deadline for students to apply is August 1. However, we encourage students to apply as soon as they are able to do so. Many programs at UMD reach capacity around the priority deadline.
There are several benefits for students who apply to UMD in the beginning (September/October) of their senior year:
- Students who apply early tend to receive their admission decision within two-three weeks of submitting all required application materials. Compare this to students who apply before the priority deadline of December 15 when it can take four-six weeks for students to receive their admission decision.
- UMD's Office of Housing & Residence Life prioritizes housing assignments for students based on the date they applied for admission to UMD (not the date they applied for housing). Students who apply for admission early (September/October) will likely have a better opportunity to be assigned to a higher ranked location when it comes to their preferred residence hall or on-campus apartment.
- Invitations for Orientation are mailed after a student is admitted to UMD (invitations for fall semester Orientation are generally first mailed by mid-November).
- UMD is a popular place, and certain majors fill very quickly. To ensure you have the best opportunity to be admitted to your first choice major, we recommend applying early.
Yes, UMD requires applicants to submit a test score from ACT or SAT. UMD does not require students to take the ACT writing test and does not "superscore."
Although UMD does not require ACT writing scores, students who wish to enroll in education programs can benefit from taking the writing portion of the ACT.
Letters of recommendation and personal statements are not required as part of the initial application process. Sometimes we might ask for additional information from a student to consider their admissibility into UMD and will directly communicate the need for additional documents and/or supporting materials.
No, if we need to request updated grades for any reason, we will request them directly from you.
Each year, the competitiveness of admission is determined by the number of applications received, the academic qualifications of the applicant pool, and the number of spaces available in the freshman class.
It is our goal to communicate to students a decision on their completed application file within two-three weeks. Students who are placed on a waitlist should expect to receive an update of their admissions status on or around the following dates: February 15, April 1, and May 15.

You only need to submit ACT/SAT scores if you have completed less than 26 college credits at the time of application. Courses that are currently in progress do not count.
Yes. Although you may have already transferred your credits to your current institution, we require an official transcript from every college/university you have attended or received college credit, including PSEO/CIS credits completed during high school. We also require official records for any credits completed through the military.
If you have a 4-year degree (unless you want to transfer credits) we only require the transcript from the institution you received your Bachelor's degree.
If you have a 2-year degree, you are required to send us your high school transcript (or equivalent) so we can verify high school graduation.
If you have a 4-year degree, we do not require a high school transcript and only require your postsecondary transcript(s).
Credits from other regionally accredited two-or-four year colleges and universities may be considered for transfer into UMD. Courses that are eligible for transfer to UMD may transfer as a direct course equivalent credit, elective credit, or undesignated elective credit. Transferred college-level credits that do not have direct course equivalents at UMD may count toward liberal education (general) requirements or total credits. UMD does not accept remedial or non-credit bearing courses for transfer, and transfer courses must have a letter grade of D or higher.

UMD does not accept students as degree seeking for summer term. If students want to take summer courses, they can apply to be a non-degree seeking/guest student here.
Be advised that if students apply to be a non-degree seeking/guest student that financial aid is not available.

Applicants are evaluated on an individual basis, with consideration given to the academic record of each student in relation to the educational system of his or her native country. Students applying must show evidence of exceptional academic achievement and probability of success at UMD.

A freshman is a student who has graduated from an equivalent (U.S.) secondary school in their native country and hasn't enrolled in a college/university (U.S. postsecondary equivalent).

UMD requires a course-by-course evaluation of international credits.
