Where can I find the most current COVID-19 information?

How can I apply to UMD?

Freshman and transfer students can apply directly to UMD.

If you are transferring from another University of Minnesota campus, please also apply directly to UMD. 

Where should I send my application materials, and any other documentation and correspondence?

Applicants can review the required documents and, if applicable, upload documents on our Application Status Portal.

Important note: The University of Minnesota Duluth Office of Admissions is requesting that you send all required documents electronically through the issuing source rather than through the mail. Electronic documents are those received directly at UMD via an approved transcript vendor (e.g., National ClearingHouse, Parchment, eSCRIP-SAFE). Sending through the mail may delay an admissions decision.

How can I send my standardized test scores to UMD?

Standardized test scores can be sent electronically through the platform you have taken your exams. Use UMD's school code (below) to have your scores sent to us:

Does UMD require an official high school transcript in the admission process?

UMD accepts unofficial high school transcripts in order to make an admissions decision for new high school students. However, all students are required to submit a "final" and "official" high school transcript to UMD upon graduation from high school. Failure to provide UMD with a "final" and "official" high school transcript prior to enrollment at UMD will result in admission revocation.

What is an official transcript?

Official transcripts are those received at UMD directly from the issuing source.

  • Official paper documents are those received at UMD in sealed, unopened envelopes from the school, college, university, federal or state department of education.
  • Official electronic documents are those received directly at UMD and marked as official via an approved transcript vendor (e.g., National ClearingHouse, Parchment, eSCRIP-SAFE).
    • Find UMD on these platforms as: “University of Minnesota - Duluth.” If prompted to enter a department at UMD, select “Undergraduate Admissions.”

Applicants may deliver paper documents in person, but the documents must be in a sealed, unopened envelope from the issuing source.

Does UMD waive the application fee?

Yes, students who have limited financial resources and meet eligibility criteria set forth by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) will have their application fee waived.

Also, UMD will accept letters in support (on official letterhead) of an application fee waiver from high school officials (counselors, principals, etc.) and representatives of College Bound Organizations (AVID, TRiO, etc.). Application fee waivers can be mailed or emailed. Please include the student's full legal name and date of birth (when possible).

UMD does not waive the application fee for International applicants. Applicants should not send cash for their application.

UMD does not waive the application fee during Minnesota College Knowledge Month.

What if I want to appeal my admissions decision?

If a student wishes to appeal their admissions decision, they should contact their Admissions Counselor or email our office: [email protected].

The admissions appeal process involves consideration of new information (updated ACT/SAT scores, high school/college transcript) or extenuating circumstances that were not included or considered in the original application for admission. It is not necessary to reapply for admission to appeal an admissions decision.

Is it possible to delay my enrollment (defer) and offer of admission to a future semester?

Offers of admission are valid only for the term indicated on the letter of admission.  All admitted students can request to be reconsidered for admission for the semester immediately following their semester of admittance without the need to reapply. (Students admitted to the online psychology program can request to be considered for admission for up to two semesters following their semester of admittance without the need to reapply.) Applicants who enroll at another school are required to reapply for admission as a transfer student. Scholarship awards are not transferable to subsequent terms of enrollment and this may be a significant factor for students who are considering delaying their enrollment to UMD. How can I submit my FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to UMD?

Where can I find information about residency & reciprocity?

You are considered a Minnesota resident if you have lived in Minnesota for at least one calendar year prior to the first day of class and if your primary reason for being in Minnesota is not to attend school.

UMD has reciprocity agreements with the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and the province of Manitoba, Canada. If you are a resident of any of these states or this province, you may qualify for resident tuition rates.

What about campus safety and security?

The University of Minnesota Duluth complies with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy & Campus Crime Statistics Act. Information about UMD campus security and crime statistics can be found here. A hard copy or alternate formats of the Annual Security and Fire Safety report is available at the UMD Police Office in 287 Darland Administration Bldg.

What Veteran resources are available on campus?

University Veterans Services assists eligible student veterans, active duty personnel, dependents, reservists, and National Guard members with G.I. Bill benefits and questions regarding state and federal educational benefits programs.

What will I see on my campus tour?

Every campus tour is unique and as much as possible geared towards prospective students' academic interest. All tours include viewing of academic buildings, a lecture hall, an on-campus residence hall, the Superior Dining Center, and other areas of campus that are relevant to the student's interest.

What kinds of additional requests can I make?

If you have any additional requests for your visit (e.g., meeting with a faculty member or adviser of the major in which you are interested), you can request this when you register for your campus visit.

Special requests must be submitted two weeks before your visit to allow enough time for our office to confirm with faculty or staff. Please be as specific as possible with your request so that we can match you to the most appropriate person. The Office of Admissions does its best to arrange meetings with our campus partners. However, we are not able to meet all special requests. At times, we may have to make an alternative arrangement (e.g., an academic adviser in lieu of a faculty member) or when faculty are not available on campus (summer visits).

Additional accommodations for interpreters, mobility concerns, etc., can also be requested.

Unfortunately, we are unable to arrange meetings with any athletic teams/coaches. You may, however, contact the Athletics Department directly at 218-726-8168.

What if there are no campus visits available on the calendar when I want to visit?

Every year, UMD welcomes over 18,000 visitors to campus. We strive to balance tour availability with a positive visit experience for you and your guests. If a visit program reaches its maximum capacity, it will display this way on our visit calendar.

Self-registration for visit programs automatically closes 24 hours before each program. If you would like to check availability, we encourage you to call our office at 218-726-7171.

Finally, there are other dates/times of the year when we do not provide campus tours:

  • Campus holidays
  • Winter break (mid December to mid January)
  • Spring break (early March)
  • Spring final exams and graduation (May)
  • Move-in and fall semester start (late August to early September)
  • Fall break (last Thursday/Friday of October)
  • Fall final exams (early December)

Does UMD provide an overnight visit/program?

Unfortunately, at UMD we do not have overnight visit programs for prospective students. If you are planning to stay in the Duluth area overnight, view our lodging page for additional information.

Does UMD provide lunch to campus visitors?

Visitors are welcome to eat in our Superior Dining Center at a discounted rate through the Office of Admissions. 

I have scheduled a campus tour, now what?

After selecting your visit day to UMD, you and your parent (if email provided) will receive a confirmation email with directions to campus and an itinerary of your campus visit. Please allow additional travel time, if needed, when coming to Duluth. We look forward to seeing you on campus!

If I have scheduled a meeting with an Admissions Counselor, what should I bring?

If you have taken any additional college credit, unofficial transcripts may be beneficial to bring with speaking to an admissions representative. Feel free to come prepared with any questions that you may have about UMD, we are happy to help!

How do I get to UMD?

Campus visitors are encouraged to park in Gold Lot A, off College Street and University Drive. Directions to this parking lot and how to get to campus can be found via Google maps.

What if I forget my parking pass/didn't receive one?

When you register for an on-campus visit, you'll provide your vehicle make, model, and license plate. This information serves as your "digital parking pass." If you bring a different vehicle on the day of your visit, we will ask you to bring a paper parking permit out to your vehicle after you check in for your tour.

Where will the campus tour be?

Prospective students and guests are encouraged to park in Gold Lot A. From Gold Lot A, please follow the Office of Admissions visit program directional signage near the parking lot and along the sidewalks to your campus visit check-in location.

What should I wear on my campus tour?

Wear comfortable shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather. UMD and the city of Duluth are located on a hill overlooking beautiful Lake Superior. Campus tours are both inside and outside of campus (weather permitting), though the UMD campus design (concourse/skywalk system) protects visitors from the harshest of Minnesota winters.

What if I need to reschedule (or cancel) my visit?

Am I considered a first-year student or a transfer student if I completed college credits in high school?

Incoming freshmen have completed or will complete a high school diploma, or obtain a GED. Students are considered first-year students if they have no previous college work, or have only completed college credits while enrolled in high school.

Students who have completed college credits after completing a high school diploma or obtaining a GED are considered transfer students.

Admission decisions are based upon several primary and secondary factors.

When is the application deadline?

The priority application deadline at UMD for the fall semester is December 15. Students who apply to UMD by December 15  and have a completed application file by February 1 are eligible for merit-based scholarship consideration. The final deadline for students to apply is August 1. However, we encourage students to apply as soon as they are able to do so. The priority application deadline for the spring semester is October 15. The final deadline for students to apply is December 1.

What are the benefits of applying to UMD early?

There are several benefits for students who apply to UMD in the beginning (September/October) of their senior year:

  • Students who apply early tend to receive their admission decision within two-three weeks of submitting all required application materials. Compare this to students who apply before the priority deadline of December 15 when it can take four-six weeks for students to receive their admission decision.
  • UMD's Office of Housing & Residence Life prioritizes housing assignments for students based on the date they applied for admission to UMD (not the date they applied for housing). Students who apply for admission early (September/October) will likely have a better opportunity to be assigned to a higher ranked location when it comes to their preferred residence hall or on-campus apartment.
  • UMD is a popular place, and certain majors fill very quickly. To ensure you have the best opportunity to be admitted to your first choice major, we recommend applying early.

Does UMD require a standardized test for admission?

No, UMD utilizes a test-optional undergraduate admission policy. Learn more here. 

Although UMD does not require ACT writing scores, students who wish to enroll in education programs can benefit from taking the writing portion of the ACT.

Does UMD require letters of recommendation or personal statements?

Letters of recommendation and personal statements are not required as part of the initial application process. Sometimes we might ask for additional information from a student to consider their admissibility into UMD and will directly communicate the need for additional documents and/or supporting materials.

Students can submit personal statements and letters of recommendation by uploading them to the Application Status Portal or via email at: [email protected].

Do I need to submit mid-term grades?

No, if we need to request updated grades for any reason, we will request them directly from you.

Does UMD have a waitlist policy?

Each year, the competitiveness of admission is determined by the number of applications received, the academic qualifications of the applicant pool, and the number of spaces available in the freshman class.

It is our goal to communicate to students a decision on their completed application file within two-three weeks. Students who are placed on a waitlist should expect to receive an update of their admissions status on or around the following dates: February 15, April 1, and May 15.

I've taken AP, IB, CLEP, or PSEO classes (non U of M). Will I get credit for my work?

Who's considered a transfer student?

A transfer student is an applicant who graduated from high school then enrolled at a post-secondary institution.

What if I'm looking to re-enroll at UMD?

Students who have previously attended UMD but have not enrolled in UMD courses for two or more semesters can learn more here.

What if I'm transferring from another University of Minnesota campus?

If you are transferring from another University of Minnesota campus, please apply directly to UMD. 

What does UMD look for in a transfer applicant?

Admission decisions are based upon several factors.

All transfer students must meet or exceed the following requirements:

  • Minimum cumulative college GPA of 2.0 (Some majors have higher requirements)
  • Successful completion of at least 75% of all attempted college coursework

When is the application deadline?

The priority application deadline for fall semester is June 15.
The final deadline for students to apply is August 1.

The priority application deadline for spring semester is October 15.
The final deadline for students to apply is December 1.

Students who apply to UMD by the priority deadline are eligible for merit-based scholarship consideration. Students must apply by the priority deadline and have a complete application file by December 15 (spring semester) and by August 15 (fall semester).

Do I need to submit ACT/SAT scores?

No, UMD utilizes a test-optional undergraduate admission policy. Learn more here.

Am I required to send transcripts from all of the colleges/universities I have attended?

Yes. Although you may have already transferred your credits to your current institution, we require an official transcript from every college/university you have attended or received college credit, including PSEO/CIS credits completed during high school. We also require official records for any credits completed through the military.

If you have a 4-year degree (unless you want to transfer credits) we only require the transcript from the institution you received your Bachelor's degree.

Do I need to send my high school transcript (or equivalent)?

All applicants, with the exception of those who have completed a Bachelor’s degree, are required to submit an official final high school transcript so we can verify high school graduation.

How do my credits transfer into UMD?

Determine how your courses transfer by visiting Transferology

Credits from other regionally accredited two-or-four year colleges and universities may be considered for transfer into UMD. Courses that are eligible for transfer to UMD may transfer as a direct course equivalent credit, elective credit, or undesignated elective credit. Transferred college-level credits that do not have direct course equivalents at UMD may count toward liberal education (general) requirements or total credits. UMD does not accept remedial or non-credit bearing courses for transfer, and transfer courses must have a letter grade of D or higher.

What's the best way to get a preliminary transfer credit evaluation?

Students can use Transferology on our transfer course planning site to learn how their credits may transfer into UMD. If you have additional questions, please contact our office. 

What if I want to take summer classes at UMD?

UMD does not accept students as degree seeking for summer term. If students want to take summer courses, they can apply to be a non-degree seeking/guest student here.

Be advised that if students apply to be a non-degree seeking/guest student that financial aid is not available.

What does UMD look for in an international applicant?

Applicants are evaluated individually, with consideration given to each student's academic record in relation to the educational system of his or her native country. Students applying must show evidence of academic achievement and probability of success at UMD.

I am an international student, does UMD’s test-optional policy apply to me?

The Office of Admissions requires the verification of English language proficiency. Accepted exams include IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo, Cambridge, or Pearson. We provide options for students to meet our English proficiency without taking a standardized test. Specific details can be found here.

We encourage non-native English speakers who have taken the ACT or SAT exam to submit their scores to UMD as well, as these scores will be used for advising and course placement purposes.

Does UMD require the TOEFL or IELTS?

Does UMD waive the application fee?

UMD does not waive the application fee for International students. Applicants should not send cash for their application fee. Payment by credit card is accepted.

What's the difference between a freshman and transfer international student?

A freshman is a student who has graduated from an equivalent (U.S.) secondary school in their native country and hasn't enrolled in a college/university (U.S. postsecondary equivalent).

A transfer student has graduated from a secondary school and has enrolled in a college/university.

How can I transfer international transfer credit?

UMD requires a course-by-course evaluation of international credits.

When is the application deadline for international students?

The priority application deadline for the fall semester is May 1.
The final deadline for students to apply is June 15.

Does UMD require health insurance?

Yes. International students are required to have health insurance while they are enrolled at UMD.
