Personal History (My Life Story)

I was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, a city of 10 million people. I did much of my education in Korea, but when it came time to get my PhD, I traded subway commutes for drives through cornfields, and attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

The Midwest began to grow on me, and I moved to Duluth to take a position teaching linguistics at UMD. I like to think I never knew what "winter" meant until I moved here! Despite the harsh winters, many wonderful things have happened to me during my time here: I got married, raised my older daughter here, had another daughter, and I got U.S. citizenship.

I enjoy researching many topics in linguistics, collecting writing instruments (I like them all, but fountain pens and mechanical pencils especially), exercising, reading (Haruki Murakami and other Japanese detective stories), taking pictures with other people's dogs, and spending time with my wife and daughters.

Below are some pictures of my family and me.
