Review for the Final Exam

The CS 3111 final exam will be given Wednesday, Dec 18 at 8:00 a.m. in MWAH 175. It covers the following chapters from Quinn plus material (approximately 40%) from the midterm exams:

• Chapter 9: Professional Ethics
• Chapter 10: Work and Wealth

Chapter 8: Computer Reliability

• You should be able to give a few examples of notable data entry errors.
• You should know causes and major consequences for the following notable system/software failures:

  • Robot Mission to Mars
  • Denver International Airport
  • Tokyo Stock Exchange

• You should be able to describe each of the four steps or activities in a software engineering process (p. 381ff).

Chapter 9: Professional Ethics

• You should know the characteristics of a profession (p. 404)
• You should be able to give a brief statement of each of the 8 major principles of the ACM Software Engineering Code of Ethics.

• What are some benefits and drawbacks of automation?
• What are some workplace changes due to computers and networks?
• In what ways have computers and networks led to globalization?
• What does the phrase "digital divide" mean? You don't have to accept its importance to answer this.
• What does the phrase "winner take all society" mean? You don't have to accept its importance to answer this.
