Text: Differential Equations and Linear Algebra, 2nd OR 3rd Edition, Edwards & Penney, Prentice-Hall.

Course Web Site: found via http:// www.d.umn.edu/~hstech

Prerequisites: Calculus I and II

Objectives: Topics to be covered will include: Matrices and matrix algebra, solution of linear algebraic equations, determinants, matrix inversion. First, second and higher order differential equations, Laplace transforms, systems of differential equations, and applications. The computer lab will involve the use of the Mathematica computational software program.

Grading: There will be homework/computational assignments (assigned during each lecture and collected once a week), two in-class exams, and a final exam. The final grade will be based on:

50% from the HIGHER of the in-class exam average and final exam grade

35% from the LOWER of the in-class exam average and final exam grade

15% from the homework/computational assignments.

All exams will be graded according to a scale no higher than

A = 90 % or above

B = 80 - 90 %

C = 70 - 80 %

D = 60 - 70 %

F = below 60 %

FINAL EXAMINATION: Thursday, December 17, 2009, 12:00-1:50

This course will adhere to UMD's Student Academic Integrity Policy, which can be found at http://www.d.umn.edu/assl/conduct/integrity. This policy sanctions students engaging in academic dishonesty with penalties up to and including expulsion from the university for repeat offenders. You are expected to neither give nor receive aid on the homework, computational assignments and exams. While it is permissible to ask of other students general questions in the class about the homework and computer labs, what you turn in should reflect what YOU understand about the material. "Team" solutions are not acceptable.

No make - up exams will be given unless arrangements are made in advance of the day of the exam. University policy will prevail in the rescheduling of the final exam. Points may be deducted for late homework/computational assignments.

Students are expected to follow the University's Student Conduct Code (http://www.d.umn.edu/assl/conduct/code) while in class.

Individuals who have a disability, either permanent or temporary, which might affect their ability to perform in this class are encouraged to inform the instructor at the start of the term. Adaptation of methods, materials, or testing may be made as required to provide equitable participation.
