2015 Antineoplastics

DRUGS THAT INTERRUPT MITOSIS
(antimitotics, spindle poisons)

Chemical Types

Plant alkaloids

I. Vinca alkaloids: VINBLASTINE, VINCRISTINE, VINORELBINE (there are others)

II. Taxanes: CAPAZITAXEL, DOCATAXEL, PACLITAXEL (there are others)

Antibiotic

III. Epilone: IXABEPILONE

The vinca alkaloids (VINCRISTINE and VINBLASTINE), the taxanes (PACLITAXEL) and the epilones (IXABELPILONE) are CCS drugs (M phase) that act as mitotic spindle poisons.  Despite their structural similarity, VINCRISTINE and VINBLASTINE have significantly different uses and toxicities.
