Stool softeners
DOCUSATE, MINERAL OIL

Mechanisms of Action

Therapeutic uses

Side effects

Although stool softeners are considered the mildest laxatives, like all laxatives/cathartics, they should not be used in cases of undiagnosed abdominal pain or unknown intestinal pathology. MINERAL OIL may result in severe lipid pneumonitis if aspirated and long term use can cause decreased absorption of fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K).
