Water balance
Drugs primarily affecting water balance
The newest treatments for diarrhea and constipation are directed toward the transporters responsible for chloride secretion in the colon: CIC2 (LUBIPROSTONE) and CFTR (LINACLOTIDE and CROFELEMER). Chloride secretion is also altered by several older agents, including OCTREOTIDE, BISMUTH SUBSALICYLATE and OPIATES. In contrast, OSMOTIC CATHARTICS and BILE ACID BINDING RESINS work by increasing or reducing the osmotic load in the colon, respectively. | ![]() |
