2014 Sensory Physiology

Answer to general principles question 1

This question tests objective:  be able to define adaptation.  Adaptation is the process by which the response to a constant stimulus declines over time (B is the correct answer).

A describes specificity more than a sensory physiologist’s definition of adaptation.

C is a description of the outcome of labelled line theory.

The difference between sensation and perception is the amount of cortical processing (D is incorrect).

E is incorrect not just because of terminology, but because receptor potentials are graded in amplitude, not “all or none”.
