2014 Sensory Physiology

Answer to general principles question 3

This question tests: compare and contrast labelled line and pattern theories.

Pattern theory states that sensory information can be encoded by the coordinated timing of activity of multiple receptors (C is the correct answer).

Perception of a “non” adequate stimulus as the adequate stimulus is an example of labelled line processing (A is incorrect).  B, C and E are correct statements, but they don’t have anything to do with pattern theory.
