Organ of Corti

  • the organ of Corti is found on the scala media side of the basilar membrane
  • there are two types of receptor cells, which have different functions:
    1. INNER HAIR CELLS (IHCs)
    2. OUTER HAIR CELLS (OHCs)
  • there are also two types of nerve fibres that innervate the receptor cells:
    1. AFFERENTS: innervate either individual IHCs or multiple OHCS
    2. EFFERENTS: innervate cell bodies of OHCs or the afferent terminals under IHCs
