  • may be DEPOLARIZING or HYPERPOLARIZING

  • has a threshold 

  • the actual transduction process couples stimulus detection (i.e., activation of a receptor protein) to an ion channel

    • the nature of receptor proteins, and how they are coupled to ion channels, is different in each sensory system
    • for example, compare the transduction channels in the somatosensory system to the visual system
