Transduction

DEFINITION: Conversion of stimulus energy to action potentials in primary afferent fibers

Hair cell transduction currents
AUDITORY SYSTEM EXAMPLE
(hair cell currents and receptor potential)
Receptor potential in response to sinusoidal stimulus
Transduction currents recorded from a hair cell in response to stereocilia deflection.
Hair cell receptor potential in response to a sinusoidal stimulus.

In the auditory system, the stages in the transduction process are:

SOUND à external/middle/inner ear (esp. organ of Corti in the cochlea) à HAIR CELL:  mechanotransduction channel à receptor potential in hair cell à neurotransmitter release à action potential in auditory nerve fibre
