Eye structure

  • the structures of the eye adapt light stimuli to ensure that they can be transduced by the photoreceptors found in the retina
  • there are 2 primary physiological functions of the accessory structures of the eye:
  1. the iris regulates the amount of light that enters the pupil, ensuring that adequate light is present to stimulate, but not saturate, photoreceptors
    • pupil diameter is under the reflex control of the CNS
  2. the cornea and lens focus the light onto the retina
