"Developed for use in classifying establishments by type of activity in which they are engaged, for the purposes of facilitating the collection, tabulation, presentation, and analysis of data. Titles, numeric codes, and industry descriptions are presented in 11 main divisions and numerous subsections. An alphabetic index lists all manufacturing and non-manufacturing industries and the codes assigned to each; an appendix gives conversion tables between the 1972/1977 edition/supplement and the 1987 edition."**
