Time Frame:

Hip-hop started in the late 60’s/early 70’s, but since then has become the most widely accepted form of popular music. In the 90’s, gangsta rap was born and changed old school rap into what is now modern, mainstream rap.

Description:

Hip-hop began in South Bronx, NYC, as a way of DJ’s of disco and funk music to keep their audiences entertained. Old school rap was identifiable by the vocal commentary by the DJ, along with break beats and turntable scratching. In the 90’s, gangsta rap was born and thrust into the mainstream. Gangsta raps lyrics generally promote violence, promiscuity, and drug use. Most of modern rap today falls in the gangsta rap genre.
