Role Playing:
Dealing with Difficult People


For each scenario, two names will be drawn to role-play a common problem stage managers face, with the goal of the stage manager to be work toward some type of resolution. After one of the following personality types is selected, the class will help develop a specific situation commonly faced by stage managers in the theatre.

 

1. The Know-It-All: Tends to be slightly arrogant, holding an opinion on every issue. When they realize they're wrong, they tend to get defensive.

 

2. The Passive Person: Never seems to offer any ideas, or let you know where they stand.

 

3. The Dictator: Tends to be a bit of a bully, constantly demanding and overly critical.

 

4. The "Yes" Person: They agree with every suggestion, but don't follow through on their commitments.

 

5. The "No" Person: Quick to point out why something won't work, but inflexible as a problem-solver.

 

6. The Griper: Prefers to complain rather than seek solutions.
