Storyboards


Project Description:

Create five 4"x 6" storyboard images:
• Individual moments chosen from the play should indicate how you would use lighting to enhance the production.
• Include at least one figure in each drawing.
• Each storyboard image should include appropriate description for each rendered moment from the play.
• Storyboard should include a title block with name of play, your name and date.

Project Goals:
• Demonstrate relative values in light.
• Define objects by defining dark to light values.
• Develop awareness of how the eye completes shapes.


Option 1

Materials:
• Black 4"x 6" paper
• White conte pencil, white color pencil, white Sharpie, white China marker, or other white markers
• Eraser

Hand Drawing Process:
• Render at least one full stage image.
• Other images can be rendered as full stage looks, medium shots, or close-ups.
• Render at least one figure in each image.
• Render a minimum of five images.

• Label scene for each image.
• Include scene information.

Hints:
• Draw lightly with white pencil so you can erase where light disappears.
• Concentrate on seeing the light and its relative values on an object and between objects.
• Object closest to the light source will have more intense white shapes and lighter grays.

Option 2

Materials:
• Laptop computer
• Digital scanner
• PhotoShop or VectorWorks software

Computer Rendering Process:
• Scan or reconstruct images for a digital rendering on your laptop.
• Reverse images in PhotoShop, or use lighting tools in VectorWorks to rendering light for each image.
• Render at least one full stage image. Other images can be combinations of close-up or medium shots.
• Render at least one figure in each image.
• Render a minimum of five images.

• Print images.
• Label each image with scene information.


Grading

Based on how well you fulfill the following criteria:
• Creation of balanced and interesting compositions.
• Images drawn in correct proportion.
• Drawings display a full range of lighting values from black to white.
• Images are clearly defined by value changes.
• Value of images and background are correct relative to each other.

• At least one wide shot of entire stage.
• A variety of wide shots, medium shots, and close-ups.
• Presentation is clearly labeled with scene information, play title and your name.
