In discussion of a renaissance person it usually asserts those who wanted to know all and wanted to be the best at everything . Each of these men Alberti, Castiglione's, and Machiavelli had there own very specialized areas in how a man in such position's should act and be to be the best at that position as one can be. Castiglione probably sums up the renessaince man in my understanding the best.
In the case of Alberti he tells of how a man in a family should be. Basically how he should be learned and be able to teach his sons all that he can in the right way for "is almost the same to know badly as not to know at all." He is very concered of "idleness" and how one must not become lazy and cause dishonor to himself. The statement "Who can ever think it possible to achieve honors and dignity without loving the study of exellent arts, without assiduous work, without striving in difficult manly tasks" Just about sums up the veiw of Alberti altogether.
In the case of Castigione's his specialty in the renaissance person is in being a courtier. His biggest concern is a man being a good fighter or good in warfare above all. He says a man must be exercised and strong, know well weapons as well as wrestling. In fihgting fairly and "quick to sieze an advantage," also not to fight unless in demand of honor. In all he believes a man should be a "manly man." This includes in writing, speaking dancing with grace, art, one must exel in every area. Overall do it all and do it well.
Machiavelli's covers the renessaince veiw of how a good prince should be. Overall his main idea tends to be whether you have to be feared or loved ruthless or kind, you must have solid grounds and maintain a stronge hold on what going on by learning from the past and knowing all you can know for your control. War being a big area to exel in.
In all the three of them touch on different areas, a family man, a courtier, and a prince. to be the best at any of these you have to strive to be the best you can be, know all you can know, to be the best at what you are.
