Here is a retry. My computer skills are unmatched in their elementryness.
I was especially impressed with the article we read "On Cannibals" by Michael De Montaigne. His objective description of the culture of these people was a breath of fresh air for me to read. Too often the people we hear about from the Renaissance were narrow minded bible pounders. (one might speculate that the same people exist even today. Who am I kidding? They do definately exist) No doubt Montaigne's essay was not accepted with open arms by society as a whole. What I wonder is whether the burned or hanged him for his blatent criticism contained in the essay. He wonders aloud whether his own country is really morally superior when it is common practice to burn, torture, and hang. These acts were done to live people. The cannibals ate only their enemies after they were killed and then only as an act of revenge, not nourishment.
What I want to comment on is the near Utopian society of the Cannibals. The people are agrarian. They make all that they need from the land. They require no metals, or letters, or mathematics, or SLAVES (can it be?, a society without SLAVES?!!), or money, or even Government!! These people had it together in a very simple way, a way in which Mother Nature was still their god. What can be more Utopian? Because of their simplicity, they had little more to do in a day than hunt, and make their special drink (what's in that drink, anyhow?). They were warriors and apart from the fact that they ate their deceased enemies, they were pretty typical warriors. They love to fight and they love their women (no mention of vessels of sin with these people).
After reading this essay I became interested in Cannibalism and looked up a few things on the web. You might not think of Haikus as a Cannibal friendly medium of expression, but they are, especially when Spam is involved. To see if the military has a problem with Cannibals click here. And finally, you might think that UMD gives their freshmen a hard time the first few days of school, well, it's nothing compared to what's in store for the the Freshmen of MIT.
Hope this works!
