I believe that in the case of Gone With the Wind, Margret Mitchell wasn't glorifying slavery because that's the way she thought it should be, but rather she was showing us what it was like in the deep south during the Civil War. After all, she grew up in the very early 1900's in Atlanta. Most likely she sat on the knees of old Confederate soldiers and listened to stories of the way things were. But as far as social criticism, I truly believe that we have to look at the author or storyteller and see why they would say the things they say and write the things they write. As far as the portrayal of women in films and so on I believe that much of it is to make money because yes, sex does sell, but there is still some that is there for a reason. We must find that reason before we shoot it down as degrading to women or whatever.
