Duluth native, Wayne Gatlin, III, son of UMD alums, Tamara and Wayne Gatlin, Jr. is the recipient of the first UMD Alumni scholarship. Wayne is a biology/pre-veterinary student in the Swenson College of Science and Engineering, and will be a junior in the fall of 2008. He is vice president for Vineyard Campus Ministries and president of the UMD Pre-Veterinary Club. He tutors chemistry students
in the UMD Tutoring Center. Wayne also serves as coach and mentor for the Spirit Mountain’s Freestyle Ski Team. He was previously named team captain and awarded the team’s Leadership Award.
Allen C. Willman, past Alumni Association President and brainchild of this scholarship, proudly presented the award at the UMD Student Awards ceremony on Sunday, April 13. The alumni scholarship is designed for children and grandchildren of UMD alumni. It is intended to provide the selected UMD sophomores, juniors or seniors outreach opportunities plus financial support. Recipients will become members of the UMD Alumni Board and will have networking opportunities with alumni, faculty and administration. They will be invited to chair committees and participate in alumni activities.
