Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders

Strategic Plan

April 2011

Vision:

Making effective communication a human right, accessible, and achievable for all.

Mission:

The Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders (CSD) strives to provide students a comprehensive education that combines theoretical knowledge with clinical application and research. We accomplish this mission through a combination of academic course work, clinical practicum, and research activities. The intent of this mission is to prepare students for graduate study and ensure their entry into the field of communication disorders as competent professionals upon completion of the graduate program. We recognize our responsibility to serve the regional community. In this regard, the department provides comprehensive speech, language, and hearing services to individuals and families in the region through a clinical atmosphere that fosters respect and support for diversity, as well as advocacy for the rights of individuals. The department also serves the regional community by acting as a continuing education resource for local professionals.

Goal 1: Enhance visibility through publication and public relations.

During the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) re-accreditation visit, it was noted that there is a significant amount of research activity and more publications were encouraged so the benefits of these activities are realized.

UMD CSD will publish one, peer-reviewed publication within three years.

Community awareness of the Robert F. Pierce Speech and Hearing Clinic (RFP) and CSD department enhances student learning by providing and maintaining the opportunity for diverse clinical experiences and good relationships with the community create better opportunity for research, clinical externship and observation experiences.

UMD CSD will conduct three public relations activities outside of campus in the next three years.

During the ASHA re-accreditation visit, it was suggested that CSD communicate more with administration and the university community.

UMD CSD will participate in three university wide events in three years.

Goal 2: Seek Funding

Current funding for student research has ended. Alternative options to fund student research and professional experiences are needed.

UMD CSD will seek and secure three funding sources, as directed by the department's development plan,in three years.

Current research funding exists in individual budgets only.

UMD CSD will seek and secure funds from three sources for faculty research and development in three years.

Goal 3: Enhance cultural awareness

It was suggested that the environment (clinic, hallways and offices) could be more welcoming and demonstrate diverse perspectives.

UMD CSD will complete three activities that enhance the recognition of the diversity within the department within three years.
