The UMD Engineering Scholarship


The Swenson College of Science and Engineering, UMD, with the help of local industry leaders, administers a scholarship program that provides over $60,000 annually to academically outstanding junior and senior UMD engineering students.

Minimum Qualifications to Apply

The minimum qualifications required in order to apply for the UMD Engineering Scholarship are that you must:
  • have a cumulative GPA of 2.70 or better,
  • have completed 30 semester credits (including credits registered for in spring semester),
  • be enrolled in UMD Swenson College of Science and Engineering during both semesters of the upcoming academic year,
  • be a major in one of the following SCSE Departments when at UMD:
    • Chemical Engineering
    • Electrical and Computer Engineering
    • Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
  • if you are not currently enrolled at UMD you must provide a current transcript with your application .

Application Form

The instructions on the application form are brief and open to individual interpretation. Evaluation of your application will be based in part on the clarity and completeness of your statement. The applicant is urged to consider the instructions carefully before beginning. They read as follows:
  • Application should be typed or printed legibly.
  • Write a personal essay in which you summarize honors or awards you have received, extra-curricular activities in which you have participated (on or off campus, including employment), the position or rank you held, and any special contributions you made.
  • Your essay should include your academic and personal achievements and your aspirations for the future.
  • Essay must be type-written or computer printed.

Timeline

Students who meet the minimum qualifications are invited to apply for the scholarship. Application forms are available in the SCSE Dean's office (140 Engineering Building) and in all three of the engineering department offices.

If you would like an application sent to you, please e-mail your address to the scholarship coordinator and she will make sure you are sent an application.

The Engineering Scholarship Committee meets late in July to make awards and students are usually notified in early August.

Scholarships are applied to a student's tuition and fees account at UMD.

The UMD Engineering/Industry Banquet

In late September/early October, the Swenson College of Science and Engineering, UMD, hosts an annual Engineering/Industry Banquet. Each year 200 - 250 students, faculty, and industry representatives join to celebrate the achievements of these deserving students.

The UMD Engineering Scholarship Advisory Committee

The Engineering Scholarship Advisory Committee consists of the department heads of the three engineering programs at UMD, the Dean of the Swenson College of Science and Engineering, industry representatives, and Brenda Risdon, who acts as the program coordinator. These members are listed below:
