Blueberry Quinoa Salad and My Plate Nutrition guide

So what is a “healthy’ lunch?  I equate the term healthy with the term balanced. This is one option of a balanced lunch you can find at Northern Shores coffee shop, right here at UMD.

Food is not inherently good or bad, it is just food made of a variety of different macro nutrients.

Healthy Eating on Campus: Northern Shores Edition

I often get asked as a Dietitian, “What do YOU eat for lunch?” Or, “is this healthy?”  As a Dietitian I don’t equate foods as good or as bad, unhealthy or healthy, etc.  If food is categorized like this, then when we eat a food that has been graded as “bad” or “unhealthy”, it often leads to feelings that we are bad, with shame or guilt piling on. Food is not inherently good or bad, it is just food made of a variety of different macro nutrients.

So what is a “healthy’ lunch?  I equate the term healthy with the term balanced. I look for a meal that follows My Plate guidelines and contains whole grains, fruits or vegetables, high quality proteins, low-fat dairy and healthy fats. Incorporating at least 3 of the 5 food groups from My Plate will give you a colorful, healthy, and filling lunch.

What would a lunch like this look like at Northern Shores Coffee House? Well, let me show you!
