White Earth American Indian Teacher Corps Project

The White Earth Tribal and Community College American Indian Teacher Corps Project in collaboration with the University of Minnesota Duluth Department of Education will prepare teachers seeking a Minnesota state teaching license in Elementary/Middle School (K-8) Education. The Program is grounded in culturally based pedagogy and curriculum and will utilize technology-based instruction.

What is the White Earth AITCP?
The White Earth Tribal and Community College (WETCC) in collaboration with the University of Minnesota Duluth Department of Education has received a grant from the Office of Indian Education Department of Education to offer an elementary education program here at the college. The program is set up to offer the last two years of UMD´s BA elementary/middle school education degree for students here at White Earth. UMD is the degree granting institution so you will formally apply to the University for admittance and be full time UMD students. In addition to coursework, you will have field placements in surrounding schools. Classes will be offered in a variety of ways ranging from days to evenings to weekend seminars.
What is our purpose?
The purpose of our program is to recruit Native American students who have the capacity to become quality teachers and provide a teacher education program. In addition, a committed support staff, culturally relevant curriculum and native faculty will ensure the program retains program participants.
Who is eligible?
American Indian and non Indian students interested in pursuing an elementary /middle school education degree with a minor in teaching elementary/middle school social studies that have already or will have completed two years of course work by January ´07 may apply to the program. We have a limited enrollment of thirty (30) students however we only have funds for fifteen (15) students. Only Native American students who qualify are eligible for this program. The program provides for books, tuition, supplies and a stipend for monthly living expenses.
When do we begin?
Classes officially began in January 2007. You will begin the program as a cohort and move through the program as such with an anticipated graduation date of May 2009.
Program Staff
The program will have primarily two (2) full time staff, a program director and a student advisor. The principal investigators for this project are Dr. Robert Peacock (WETCC) and Amy Bergstrom (UMD).
