Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
Standards for Financial Aid Recipients at UMD
The Office of Financial Aid and Registrar is dedicated to providing financial aid to eligible students.
To comply with regulations for federal, state, campus, and other aid sources, the following policies and procedures governing standards for Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) are in effect for all students receiving financial aid while attending UMD.
Students who fail to meet these SAP standards will be considered ineligible for financial aid.
UMD uses the SAP standards to evaluate the academic performance of financial aid recipients in three ways:
- Federal regulations define an eligible financial aid recipient as one who is admitted and enrolled in an eligible degree or certificate granting program and is making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) towards successful completion of their program of study. This is the Admission Requirement for this program.
- Evaluation of the qualitative standard, which is represented by your grade point average (GPA).
- Evaluation of quantitative standards, which measure the specific percentages of your credit completion ratio and maximum timeframe for completing the published length of your degree or certificate program.
SAP review is done at the end of each term after grades are posted. After the review is complete, students are notified of their SAP status via their University e-mail accounts. Students who do not meet UMD’s SAP standards will be placed on financial aid probation, suspension, and/or timeframe warning.
Students can review their SAP status online at http://www.d.umn.edu/fareg/. Choose ‘Check your Financial Aid Status’. You will need your UM Internet ID and password.
Requirements for federal and state Satisfactory Academic Progress are identical, with the exception of a stricter GPA requirement of 2.0 for juniors and seniors in the state regulations.
Students who have failed to meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress guidelines may appeal to reestablish eligibility for aid on the basis of medical, legal, emotional, or other extenuating circumstances that may have interfered with their academic progress.
NOTE: SAP standards monitor academic progress for financial aid recipients based on federal and state regulations. This is not to be confused with a collegiate unit's academic progress standards. Please contact your college Student Affairs Office with questions on collegiate academic progress standards.
