Food Allergies & Intolerances

Most food allergies or intolerances can be managed independently. Contact UMD Dining Services Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Jean Rodvold if you plan to dine on campus with a food allergy. She can provide you with information about the menus, recipes, ingredients and food preparation methods. She can also help you navigate the existing dining options and provide you with the resources you need to make a meal plan work. All meetings are completely confidential.

At UMD we take food allergies seriously. We realize that food allergies are a growing public health concern, with as many as 15 million people having food allergies. UMD Dining Services strives to provide safe, healthy, and tasty food to all students. To enhance the safety of our students we take a number of preventative measures, including staff trainings and point of sale allergen labeling. We label for the eight main allergens plus gluten. Please note that although we take great care to provide the most up to date information, there is the potential for menu substitutions. It is ultimately the responsibility of the student to ask questions and make safe and healthy choices while dining on campus.

Eight foods account for 90% of all food-allergic reactions, these include:
  • Milk

  • Eggs

  • Peanuts

  • Tree Nuts

  • Wheat

  • Soy

  • Fish

  • Shellfish

LACTOSE INTOLERANCE & MILK ALLERGIES

There are dairy alternatives available on campus at UMD. Soymilk alternatives are offered at all of the Dining Services locations. All retail locations provide Silk brand Soymilk. The Northern Shores Coffee shop provides soy as an alternative for your coffee beverage. The Dining Center has soymilk available; just ask for it from the grill.

NUT ALLERGIES

The residential Dining Center takes great care in serving minimal menu items containing peanuts or tree nuts. The Dining Center does provide peanut butter as an option for students, and Sun butter is an available option for those with nut allergies. To learn exactly which menu items may contain peanuts or tree nuts, please contact UMD Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Jean Rodvold.

Please see “Eating in the DC with Nut Allergies” for more information about eating at the residential dining center with nut allergies.
